Residents are heading to the polls today around the state to vote in their county’s municipal elections.
Many elections in surrounding counties are focused on city leaders, new members for the board of education, along with some sales tax questions and propositions.
Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack Garvey says she is hoping for a high turnout during today’s election
“I’m hoping we at least get 22%, I was looking at the averages of the past April elections, and it fluctuates from almost 25% and then down to 19%, so let’s just hit the middle and go with 23%,” Baack Garvey tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.
In Buchanan County, voters will decide on a new Mayor in the race between John Josendale and Larry Miller. On the ballot as well is each seat on the city council, with District one and District two running unopposed, as well as the At-Large seats. Voters can choose up to at least four At-Large candidates on their ballots.
Voters will also choose from seven running for the St. Joseph Board of Education to fill two seats, as well as one question regarding property tax credits.
Nodaway County Clerk Melinda Patton on the other hand is expecting a slightly lower turnout, saying turnout in an April election is not typically as high as an August or November election.
“We probably look at about 15% is what we generally get for an April election,” Patton says.
Along with city alderman positions and city council members, the Maryville School District does have a tax levy question on the ballot for residents to vote on.
Polls open at 6am and are open until 7pm. We will have election coverage results tonight.
