(Radio Iowa) – The wild turkey season is just a few weeks away in Iowa and early indications are it could be a good one.

D-N-R wildlife biologist Jim Coffey says birds should be plentiful as the state’s seen several good back-to-back brooding seasons. Coffey says ground-nesting birds like pheasants, quail and turkeys do well in dry years. More turkeys can be a good thing for hunters, but Coffey says it can also give the birds more warning, as they’re a very wary species, and they can hear and see better than humans.

The youth-only wild turkey season for residents age 15 and younger opens April 10th, while the first main season begins April 13th.
