A series of classes hosted by Young at Heart Resources helped to connect retirees and older adults with meaningful volunteer opportunities in their communities.
Residents from Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth counties were invited to take part in the four-day program titled Give 5, which introduced participants to a wide range of volunteer possibilities across the region. Each class featured presentations from local agencies eager to share their missions and the many ways volunteers can make a difference.
Participating organizations included the University of Missouri Extension, Young at Heart Resources, Special Olympics, Missouri SHIP, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest Community Food Bank, Interserv, Youth Alliance, Open Door Food Kitchen, St. Joseph Public Library, Mosaic Life Care/Inspire U, St. Joseph Museums, Pivotal Point Thrift Store & Transitional Housing, YWCA Women’s Shelter, Three Rivers Hospice, Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph, and Noyes Home.
Young at Heart Resources reports that the attendees expressed strong enthusiasm for the program, sharing that they “enjoyed being able to find out information concerning the need for volunteers” and appreciated “the wide variety of programs in the area.” The Give 5 series was very well received, with many participants excited to connect with an organization they feel passionate about and begin giving back through volunteer service.
