A rare mammoth bone was discovered in northwest Missouri by local paleontologist Jason Howery, adding to his collection of ice age remains in the area. The bone, believed to be from a Columbian mammoth, was found at a prehistoric butcher site in Nodaway County, where evidence of ancient human activity still exists. Howery, who has been searching for ice age remains for over two decades, hopes to inspire the next generation through community programs and school outreach. He is currently raising funds to conduct further testing on the bone, including CT scanning and radiocarbon dating, to determine its age and value.
