Gov. Kim Reynolds proposed a property tax overhaul during her annual Condition of the State address Tuesday night, seeking to limit local government spending and protect senior citizens from rising assessments.

Under the governor’s plan, annual revenue growth for city and county budgets would be capped at 2%. Reynolds also called for a property tax freeze for Iowans older than 64 who own homes valued at less than $350,000.

The 2026 legislative agenda also prioritizes rural health care. Reynolds informed lawmakers that she intends to dedicate $50 million in recently acquired federal funding to expand cancer screening tests and treatment services throughout the state.
