The veteran Republican leading tax efforts in the Iowa Senate says it is time to stop “putting band-aids” on the state’s property tax system and pursue a permanent overhaul.

State Sen. Dan Dawson, chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, said the 2026 legislative session beginning Monday offers a rare opportunity for wholesale changes.

Dawson’s comments come as Gov. Kim Reynolds prepares to release her own reform proposal, likely during her annual condition of the state address next week.
