Larson Triumphs in Special Election on Landowner Rights Platform

Building on her near-miss in last year’s primary, Republican Wendy Larson of Odebolt decisively won the special election for the Iowa House seat formerly held by Mike Sexton.

Unofficial tallies show Larson beating Democrat Rachel Burns by 40 points in the district encompassing Sac, Calhoun, Pocahontas, and a portion of Webster County.

Larson’s campaign focused on the hot-button local issue of protecting landowner rights, particularly relevant to property owners opposing the Summit Carbon Solutions Pipeline. Her victory ensures the Republican Party’s 67-seat supermajority is unchanged.

The vacancy opened when President Trump appointed the previous representative, Mike Sexton, as state director for USDA Rural Development.
