St. Joseph Police Chief Paul Luster has requested the Missouri
State Highway Patrol investigate an incident in which a young man shot himself
while riding with a St. Joseph police officer.

The St. Joseph Police Department reports that the officer
provided transportation for a 24-year-old man in a non-criminal matter shortly
before 10:30 Thursday night. Shortly after the ride began the man ā€œseverely
injured himself,ā€ according to the department. The department says the officer
rushed the man to the Mosaic Life Care emergency room where he was treated for
a life-threatening injury.

The department reports the man is in critical condition.

Police Chief Luster asked the Missouri State Highway Patrolā€™s
Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate the matter. The St. Joseph
Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation into the matter.
